The Gospel is Not Vanity - Jake Heenehan
Scripture: Ecclesiastes 1:1-14
In Ecclesiastes 1, Solomon starts his book off with “Vanity of vanities...all is vanity”. The Hebrew word for “Vanity” is the word Hebel. This word means “meaningless, vapor, something that eludes”. So Solomon tells us that everything is meaningless or vapor. He later says that everything in life is like chasing the wind, never to be caught. Solomon also tells us that everyone is pursuing this world hoping to be fulfilled, and they will all wind up just trying to grasp the wind. If we take Solomon’s wisdom, we understand that everyone is going to wind up exhausted and broken. The beauty is that Solomon tells us that the only thing that satisfies us is the Lord.
We must understand that people need the Gospel because they are all chasing after the wind and will end up broken and unsatisfied. Jesus Christ is the greatest fulfillment. He is not hebel, or vanity, or meaningless. He is the savior of the world.
